This month the social media accounts of English Creates Futures will be curated by a group of English Language students from the University of Reading. The work you will see in this space over the next four weeks comes from students on the module LS2LDM Language and Digital Media who were asked to reflect on AI in English Language Studies using their own vernacular social media genres: blog posts, Instagram carousels, memes, and short-form videos.
In these posts the students tackle a range of different topics related to language such as creativity, bias, manipulation, anthropomorphism and sycophancy. The position they take is neither ‘pro-AI’ not ‘anti-AI’. Rather, they reflect upon their experiences with these new technologies with curiosity, openness, humour, and criticality. Most importantly, they draw upon the knowledge they have gained from studying English, including their understanding of genre, sociolinguistics, creative writing and multimodality, to understand where AI is taking them and whether or not they want to follow.
