Online Event: Loving Words: How to Analyse A Love Poem
Using the AQA poetry anthology’s ‘Pre-1900 Love Poems’ selection as its starting point, this online workshop will explore the many different ways poets past and present have written about love, romance, sex and desire. It will address common tropes and sub-genres in this branch of writing, and introduce students to a range of critical approaches relevant to the analysis of love poetry.

Dr Carl Thompson is Reader in Romanticism at the University of Surrey. His research interests cover literature of the Romantic period (late 18th-early19th century) and travel writing of all periods (with particular emphasis in recent years on travel writing by women).
Danielle Dove is a Surrey Future Fellow and Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Surrey. Her research focuses on Victorian and neo-Victorian literature, with a specific emphasis on dress, fashion, material culture and sustainability. Her first book, Victorian Dress in Contemporary Historical Fiction: Materiality, Agency, and Narrative, is out now with Bloomsbury Academic.
Dr Lucy Ella Rose is a Lecturer in Victorian Literature at Surrey University, focusing on literature, art, culture and feminism (their connections and intersections). She has a special interest in late-Victorian creative partnerships, focusing on neglected female figures.
