Creative Criticism : What is Creative Criticism and what might it offer English?
In this timely discussion between Prof John Schad (Lancaster) and Dr Barbara Cooke (Loughborough), they tackle questions on the exciting possibilities and potential pitfalls of Creative Criticism. Topics up for debate, include: How might an emphasis on Creative Criticism be of mutual benefit both to Creative Writing and Hermeneutics (Literature)? Is Creative Criticism just a reduction of a “Discipline” into a form of confession or autobiography? What examples of do we have of where Creative Criticism has “worked”? Where have the speakers themselves been moved to write it?

John Schad researches in post-criticism, or critical-creative writing; life-writing; play-writing; modernism; Victorian writing; literary theory; and the relationship between religion and literature. These interests are reflected in his current book project, Ship of Names, which works on and around the figure of Walter Benjamin’s estranged son Stefan. He has also been General Editor for a series of experimental monographs called critical inventions – the series includes titles by Thomas Docherty, Roger Ebbatson, J.Hillis Miller, Kevin Mills, David Punter, Michael Wood and Jean-Michel Rabaté.
Barbara Cooke is a textual editor and creative non-fiction writer with interests in archival theory, creative writing pedagogy and multimodality. Her periods of focus are interwar and twenty-first century literature. She is the co-executive editor of the Oxford University Press Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh project and sits on the editorial board of the Complete Works of Ford Madox Ford. Barbara is Vice-Chair of the British Association for Modernist Studies.
