“My career is a product of having studied English, not only in terms of the “hard” and “soft” skills that I have developed and continue to develop during my studies, but also in terms of the connections that I have built with other researchers, writers and journalists – many of whom also have academic backgrounds in English.

I have helped to organise horror film festival Grimmfest. I have also hosted film screenings with The Light Cinemas and the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. I have appeared on several podcasts, and I have spoken at the UK Ghost Story Festival. This would not have been possible had I not been able to meet people through English academic conferences and other events, and had I not been able to learn and practice skills like public speaking and engagement.

English has expanded my tastes and introduced me to perspectives that I might not have encountered in my personal life. I have also discovered art that has brought me great joy, and developed understandings of other people’s experiences that has shaped my worldview and politics. I have become a more empathetic and inquisitive person, which has had significant benefits both in my personal life and in my career, particularly in journalism.”
