Helen
PhD Graduate, English Literature, University of Surrey
“English Literature is the space where creativity meets analysis – a wildly expansive, generative field. It is full of people who love ideas and want to help you realise yours: mentors, collaborators, advisers and friends.
My PhD was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It gave me the freedom to think and explore, innovate
in my field, and develop my unique, interdisciplinary research style. While researching, I gained practical skills in archives and museums, which kickstarted my career after graduation.
On a personal level, I gained the ability to express myself, the confidence to stand up and speak, and the conviction that my ideas are important. These skills are essential for the world in which we live – a world where persuasion and critical thinking are an antidote to oppressive power structures. Literature will always be a vital spark in my life.”
