Action On is a series of free English Shared Futures satellite events tackling issues effecting the disciplines of English, Linguistics and Creative Writing.
On 8th November, University English and the English Association hosted a special ‘Action On … Artificial Intelligence’ online event. This workshop considers the implications of AI for our disciplines generally, with an emphasis on being ‘hands on’, providing colleagues with practical support for using AI in the classroom. This is relevant to all areas of the subject – language, literature, and creative writing.

Our three speakers:
Aaron Hanlon is Associate Professor of English and affiliated faculty in the Science, Technology, and Society Department at Colby College in Maine, USA. Lorna Richardson is Lecturer in Digital Humanities and Heritage in the School of Media, Language and Communication Studies at the University of East Anglia in the UK. A. E. Osworth is a transgender novelist and Lecturer in the School of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Their first novel, We Are Watching Eliza Bright, was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2021. This novel, which tells the story of a woman whose life is transformed by speaking out against workplace hostility, has been praised as being both “dark and timely’, ‘fun and smart’ and for how it ‘defies categories in all the best ways.” It was longlisted for The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, the Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize, and the Tournament of Books; and was also a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. A. E.’s next novel, Awakened, will be published in March 2025. At British Columbia, AE teaches on a range of courses, including ‘writing for new media’ and ‘interactive storytelling’.
