“An English student leaves university not just with a degree but with the ability to critically assess
the world around them. We are self-sufficient workers with an eye for detail. We think deeply and are armed with the right tools to share these thoughts with the world.
Studying English taught me how to get my voice heard. Not the voice of some hypothetical intellectual (you know the one… pipe, elbow patches, etc.), but my voice. English Literature is my career now, and the longer I spend doing this, the more I feel that this is my vocation. When I research, I am a literary theorist, an historian, a sociologist, an economist. What we do is so much more than sitting at a desk all day. I visit archives, get out in the community, I have even turned my hand to archaeology. Studying English has broadened my horizons to no end, and the variety in what we do has rendered me an excellent teammate in a pub quiz.”
