“As the first generation in my family to go to university, I still pinch myself for having been able to not only go to university, but to commit to the subject I was passionate about. The external pressures were there, with people often saying English does not lead to any immediate, tangible career so it must be pointless. I couldn’t disagree more.

English has benefited me not only by enriching my mind and feeding my passion for reading and for literature as a subject – it has also shaped the way I approach problem-solving professionally and in regards to society. Having conversations about books revolving around class, gender, race, empire, economy, has made me an advocate for positive change in society. Not long after graduating, I started working for The Big Issue magazine – there, I often had conversations and wrote articles that were, in one way or another, rooted in what I studied at university.”
