DESCRIPTION:‘Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about.’ \nMicheál Mac Liammóir’s renowned play The Importance of Being Oscar returns to the stage following huge critical acclaim. \nStep beyond the footlights into the private world of Oscar Wilde. \nTold in the shadows of Reading Gaol\, where Wilde was imprisoned\, this strictly limited run will immerse audiences in a compelling journey through the loves and losses\, successes and struggles of the iconic man – from the eccentric socialite to the imprisoned outcast.  \nA beautiful tribute to an icon of the world of theatre\, liberally laced with Wilde’s signature wit and wisdom and featuring excerpts of many of his best-loved works including An Ideal Husband\, The Picture of Dorian Gray\, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Ballad of Reading of Gaol. This one man show promises to be a Wilde-ly entertaining night. \nDirected by Michael Fentiman (Amelie\, Jekyll & Hyde\, The Lion\, The Witch & The Wardrobe) and co- produced with the multi award-winning Original Theatre who brought you the hit tours of Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d\, Being Mr Wickham and Alan Bennett’s The Habit of Art. \nJoin us for a post-show discussion with Andrew Mangham (Chair) Professor of Victorian Literature and Medical Humanities at The University of Reading\, John Scholar Lecturer of English Literature at The University of Reading\, Sos Eltis Professor at The University of Oxford\, Geoff Sawers author of an account of Oscar Wilde’s Incarceration in Reading Gaol\, and Alastair Whatley\, performer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Preview: Landscapes of Change
DESCRIPTION:Landscapes of Change brings together poetry and science to explore how the impact of the climate emergency is making itself known. The exhibition\, running from 4 June – 31 August features films\, poetry across multiple languages\, and special activities for children. \nIn September 2023\, scientists Kathryn Adamson and Lestyn Barr and poet Helen Mort visited Narsaq\, South Greenland to undertake scientific research and to work with the local community. In Narsaq\, the warming of the oceans and resulting sea level rise are resulting in coastal erosion\, melting of permafrost and decreased sea ice thickness with major human\, wildlife\, and economic impacts. \nAs well as examining these changes scientifically\, the project aimed to start a dialogue with members of the community whose lives are changing rapidly. \nThe exhibition preview will include contributions from the team behind the research\, along with a reveal of a limited-edition hand-printed poetry broadside co-created with MMU students and staff for the occasion. \nTo reserve your free spot\, please use the eventbrite link below.

DESCRIPTION:Every GCSE poem with all kinds of free supporting resources \nThis event is for everyone who teaches GCSE English. We’ll give you a guided tour of the Poetry By Heart 14+ timeline anthology. This free resource gives you every poem set for examination by the AQA\, Edexcel\, OCR and Eduqas awarding bodies in a timeline format so you can see them over time. There are video and audio recordings of the poems\, mini biographies of the poets\, notes to help pupils find a way into the poems\, and extra resources to help teachers develop their love of poetry and plan lessons. \nDr Julie Blake\, FEA\, FRSL(Hon)\, co-directs Poetry By Heart\, the national poetry speaking competition for schools. She researches and writes about the history of poetry for children\, creates digital and print anthologies of poems for children and young people\, teaches poetry pedagogy and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of poetry in the school English curriculum. Poetry by Heart is a national poetry speaking competition for schools and colleges in England. It’s also a website for teaching and learning about poetry – by heart and out loud\, and with plenty of choice for young people to explore poems and find the ones they love. \nThis online event is organised by the English Association and part of the #EnglishCreates Week.
